Over 50 Years of Artistic Excellence

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Sonya Walker is an accomplished visual artist whose creative journey began at the age of six. What started as a childhood passion for drawing developed into a lifelong commitment to artistic expression, visual storytelling, and the creation of original fine art.

Walker studied illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) before pursuing her professional artistic career independently. Throughout more than five decades, she has developed a diverse body of work reflecting African American culture, history, the human experience, and the beauty of everyday life.

A Distinguished Artistic Career

Walker's artwork has been exhibited at numerous museums, universities, galleries, and cultural institutions throughout the United States, including:

• Lucy Craft Laney Museum — Augusta, Georgia

• Harriet Tubman Museum — Macon, Georgia

• Rollins College — Winter Park, Florida

• Tuskegee University — Tuskegee, Alabama

• Savannah State University — Savannah, Georgia

• African American Atelier — Durham, North Carolina

Her exhibition history also includes Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, where she presented her most recent one-woman art exhibition in 2017.

In 1992, American Visions Magazine recognized Walker as one of eight up-and-coming artists.

Notable Commissions and Collectors

In 2019, Walker was commissioned directly by the University of Georgia to create a portrait of Dr. Sharon Nyota Tucker, the first African American woman to graduate from the university's School of Law.

Her artwork has also found its way into the private collections of notable individuals, including Susan L. Taylor, former Editor-in-Chief of Essence magazine; legendary entertainer Gladys Knight; Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men; and acclaimed actress, dancer, and producer Debbie Allen.
